Spilt Milk

Released in 2009 on the legendary Blue Note label, Spilt Milk is the debut studio album by Savannah-raised singer Kristina Train. While the label initially sought a more traditional jazz-pop production, Train opted to record in London with producer Jimmy Hogarth, known for his work with Duffy and Amy Winehouse. This decision resulted in a unique sonic profile that blended American Southern soul with British chamber-pop sophistication. Train’s involvement was hands-on; she co-wrote the majority of the tracks and personally arranged and overdubbed the string sections on several songs, showcasing her background as a classically trained violinist. The album received critical praise for its mature songwriting and Train's distinctive 'smoky' vocal delivery, often compared to the greats of the 1960s soul era. Despite its Blue Note pedigree, the album leans heavily into Americana and orchestral pop, marking it as a standout crossover success that prioritized mood and cinematic texture over traditional jazz improvisation.
