Released in 1996, Spiritchaser represents the final studio statement of Dead Can Dance's original run. Recorded at Brendan Perry's Quivvy Church studio in Ireland, the album is a significant stylistic shift toward 'World' music, specifically drawing from African, South American, and Indian rhythmic traditions. Unlike the neoclassical leanings of 'Aion' or 'The Serpent's Egg', this record focuses on the hypnotic power of the drum. A notable point of critical and legal interest is the track 'Indus', which bears a striking resemblance to George Harrison's 'Within You Without You'. Harrison ultimately granted permission for the use of the melody, resulting in a rare co-writing credit.
