Released in 1991, Spiritual Archives represents a pivotal moment in Delerium's evolution. Following their more abrasive early work, this album sees Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber refining their 'dark ambient' blueprint. It is significantly more atmospheric and less rhythm-focused than their later multi-platinum success 'Semantic Spaces', leaning heavily into the aesthetics of the Nettwerk industrial scene of the time. The recording is characterized by its extensive use of early digital samplers to create 'sacred' spaces, often pulling from liturgical and ethnic sources to build a sense of ancient mystery. Critically, it is regarded as a cornerstone of the dark ambient genre, bridging the gap between the experimental industrial of the 1980s and the cinematic downtempo of the late 1990s.
