Stanze

Released in 1992, Stanze represents a pivotal but often overlooked chapter in Ludovico Einaudi's discography. Composed for the electric harp and performed by Cecilia Chailly, the album consists of sixteen pieces that Einaudi envisioned as distinct rooms or living spaces. This architectural concept is reflected in the music's structural rigidity and minimalist ethos. While Einaudi is now synonymous with the piano, Stanze demonstrates his early fascination with the repetitive, cyclical nature of stringed instruments and their ability to create immersive ambient environments. The recording was originally commissioned for a radio program and later gained wider recognition after being championed by BBC's John Peel. Sonically, it sits closer to the avant-garde minimalism of Philip Glass or the ambient experiments of Harold Budd than to the pop-classical crossover style Einaudi would later perfect. It remains his most austere and perhaps most intellectually rigorous work.
