Sunshine Dust represents the final evolution of Skyharbor, marking a significant shift toward a more song-oriented, atmospheric sound. Following the departure of original vocalist Daniel Tompkins, the band recruited Eric Emery, whose melodic range pushed the group further into alternative and dream-pop territories. The album's creation was famously fraught; the band re-recorded the entire project after being unsatisfied with the initial 2017 sessions, seeking a more organic and cohesive feel.
