Sunshine Superman

Released in late 1966, Sunshine Superman is widely considered one of the first true psychedelic pop albums. Produced by Mickie Most, it marked a radical departure from Donovan's earlier acoustic folk style, introducing a full rock band and Eastern instrumentation like the sitar. The title track became a massive US hit, though contractual disputes delayed the album's UK release for nearly a year. Sonically, the record is a masterclass in baroque-folk fusion, utilizing harpsichords and orchestral flourishes to create a 'Swinging London' aesthetic. It features 'Season of the Witch', a darker, more rhythmic track that influenced the development of folk-rock and heavy psych. The album's success established Donovan as a central figure in the counterculture, bridging the gap between the British folk revival and the burgeoning psychedelic scene.
