Superpinkymandy

Released in 1993 as a limited Japan-only pressing of approximately 5,000 copies, Superpinkymandy is the elusive debut of Beth Orton. Produced by William Orbit during their personal and professional partnership, the album serves as a bridge between Orbit's 'Strange Cargo' series and the emerging trip-hop scene. While Orton would later achieve fame by blending folk with electronics, this debut leans heavily into the latter, featuring dance-influenced rhythms and ambient textures that reflect the early 90s UK electronic underground. Several tracks were famously reworked for her breakthrough 'Trailer Park' and Orbit's own projects, most notably 'She Cries Your Name.' The record includes a notable cover of John Martyn's 'Don't Want to Know,' signaling Orton's folk interests even amidst the heavy synthesis. Because Orton often omits this release from her official chronology, it remains a cult object of desire for collectors and a vital document of her stylistic origins.
