Supreme Balloon

Released in 2008 on Matador Records, Supreme Balloon represents a conceptual 'hard reset' for Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt. Known for their musique concrète approach using unconventional sound sources (surgical procedures, cow uteri, etc.), the duo restricted themselves here to a strict 'no microphones' rule. The album is composed entirely of synthesizers, ranging from rare consumer rigs to professional modular systems. This self-imposed limitation resulted in their most melodic and accessible work to date. The album's centerpiece is the 24-minute title track, a sprawling epic of minimalist evolution that critics compared to the works of Terry Riley and Tangerine Dream. Despite the lack of 'real world' samples, the album maintains the duo's characteristic tactile detail through the physical quirks of analog hardware. It was highly praised for its 'cosmic pop' aesthetic and remains a high-water mark for 21st-century electronic composition.
