Released in March 1963, Surfin' USA marked the Beach Boys' commercial breakthrough and the moment Brian Wilson began to assert his creative vision. While their debut was tentative, this sophomore effort solidified the 'California Sound.' The title track famously adapted Chuck Berry's 'Sweet Little Sixteen' into a surfing anthem, leading to a later copyright credit for Berry. Notably, the album is split between vocal tracks and surf instrumentals like 'Misirlou' and 'Let's Go Trippin',' reflecting the band's roots in the local Southern California instrumental scene.
