Taboo VI: The Homecoming

Released in 1991, Taboo VI: The Homecoming is one of the earliest entries in the Mountain Goats' prolific discography, originally appearing as a cassette on Shrimper Records. It serves as a blueprint for the lo-fi 'boombox era' that would define John Darnielle's work throughout the 1990s. Recorded primarily on a Panasonic RX-FT500, the album is characterized by its heavy tape hiss and the 'grind' of the machine's internal compressor. The tracklist features a mix of original character-driven sketches and idiosyncratic covers, including a notable rendition of Hank Williams' 'I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.' Musically, it is sparse, consisting almost entirely of Darnielle's nasal, urgent vocals and frantic acoustic guitar.
