Released in 1998, Teatro represents a pivotal creative peak in Willie Nelson's late-career renaissance. Following the success of his previous collaboration with producer Daniel Lanois on the track 'The Maker' (originally by Lanois), Nelson decamped to a converted 1920s Spanish theater in Oxnard, California. The recording environment is a character itself; the natural acoustics of the theater provide a cavernous, live-off-the-floor energy that Lanois augmented with his signature atmospheric processing. The album consists primarily of Nelson revisiting his own compositions from the 1960s, stripping them of their original 'Nashville Sound' artifice and reclothing them in sparse, percussion-driven arrangements.
