Temple Bar

Released in 1995, Temple Bar represents a significant artistic turning point for John Waite. Following his departure from the supergroup Bad English, Waite sought to distance himself from the 'corporate rock' machinery and return to a more authentic, singer-songwriter approach. Produced by Mike Shipley, the album was recorded during a period of personal upheaval following Waite's divorce, which heavily informed the lyrical themes of isolation, self-reflection, and eventual hope. Waite famously negotiated with Imago label head Terry Ellis to ensure the record 'wouldn't be a rock record' in the traditional sense, opting instead for a soulful, rootsy sound that highlighted his bluesy tenor. The album includes a notable cover of Hank Williams' 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry,' further signaling Waite's move toward Americana and adult contemporary styles. While 'How Did I Get By Without You' found modest success on the Adult Contemporary charts, the album is most highly regarded by critics and fans as Waite's most honest and cohesive solo work, successfully bridging the gap between his 80s pop-rock past and a more mature, introspective future.
