Tender Lover

Released in July 1989, Tender Lover is the sophomore effort that transformed Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds from a successful group member (The Deele) and songwriter into a solo superstar. Produced alongside L.A. Reid, the album is a cornerstone of the New Jack Swing era, though it leans more heavily into melodic soul than many of its contemporaries. The record yielded four massive hits, including the R&B #1s 'It's No Crime' and the title track, as well as the enduring slow jam 'Whip Appeal'. Sonically, it represents the peak of late-80s studio technology, utilizing the Roland TR-808 and various FM synths to create a sound that was both futuristic and deeply rooted in the tradition of the Great American Songbook.
