The Aux

Released in late 2023, The Aux marks a definitive stylistic pivot for Blockhead (Tony Simon), who spent much of the previous two decades defined by his instrumental 'Music by Cavelight' sound. While he has always produced for rappers, most notably Aesop Rock, this project serves as his first true 'producer album' in the vein of Pete Rock or J Dilla, where he acts as the primary architect for a rotating cast of underground heavyweights. The album features a 'who's who' of the 2020s indie rap scene, including Billy Woods, Navy Blue, and Armand Hammer. Sonically, the record retains Blockhead's penchant for dusty, crate-digging samples but applies them to more aggressive, boom-bap-oriented structures. The production is characterized by its density and cinematic flair, often utilizing unconventional melodic loops that provide a tense, noir-like backdrop for the lyrical performances. It was received as a triumphant return to his hip-hop roots, solidifying his status as a versatile producer capable of commanding both the ambient and the lyrical spheres.
