The Black Album

Released in 1980, The Black Album represents the definitive turning point for The Damned, marking their evolution from UK punk pioneers to architects of gothic rock. As a double album, it was an ambitious statement of intent, featuring a mix of studio experimentation and a live set that bridged their past and future. The centerpiece, 'Curtain Call', occupies an entire side of the original vinyl, a 17-minute prog-inflected gothic suite that remains one of the most daring tracks in the punk canon. Produced during a period of creative flux, the album introduced Paul Gray (formerly of Eddie and the Hot Rods) on bass, whose melodic style significantly altered the band's sonic architecture.
