The Clay People

Released in 1998 on Slipdisc Records, the self-titled third album from The Clay People marked a significant stylistic shift. Produced by Neil Kernon, known for his work with Queensrÿche and Cannibal Corpse, the record moved the band away from their pure coldwave and darkwave roots toward a more 'organic' industrial metal sound. This transition was polarizing; while some critics praised the infusion of 'metal guts' and live energy, purists felt the band had sacrificed their electronic uniqueness for a more conventional heavy rock template. The album is defined by its mid-tempo chugging riffs, prominent use of vocal processing, and a dense mix that emphasizes the rhythm section.
