The Duke

Released in 2016, The Duke is a 5-track EP that serves as a tribute to Wayne Ford, a fan who befriended vocalist Randy Blythe before passing away from leukemia. The EP is notable for its title track, which features a significant stylistic shift for the band, incorporating clean, melodic vocals and a more traditional alternative metal structure. This departure was a deliberate choice to reflect the lyrical themes of mortality and the dignity of the human spirit. The release also includes 'Culling', a leftover track from the VII: Sturm und Drang sessions, and three live recordings from major festivals. Critically, the EP was viewed as a poignant, if brief, expansion of the band's emotional palette. It stands as a unique entry in their catalog, moving away from the 'pure American metal' label toward something more atmospheric and somber, while still retaining the rhythmic foundation that defines their sound.
