The End of Heartache

Released in 2004, The End of Heartache is the pivotal third studio album by Killswitch Engage and the first to feature vocalist Howard Jones. Replacing founding member Jesse Leach, Jones brought a more melodic, soulful vocal range that allowed the band to expand their songwriting into more accessible territory without sacrificing their hardcore roots. Produced by guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz at Zing Studios, the album is noted for its high-fidelity, 'perfectionist' production style, featuring meticulously doubled guitars and a wall-of-sound approach that became the gold standard for the metalcore genre. The title track received a Grammy nomination, and the album was eventually certified Gold by the RIAA. It successfully bridged the gap between the underground Massachusetts hardcore scene and mainstream metal, influencing a generation of bands with its 'good cop/bad cop' vocal dynamic and Gothenburg-style riffing. It remains a cornerstone of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal.
