The Eraser

Released in 2006, The Eraser marked Thom Yorke's first foray outside of Radiohead, signaling a shift toward the laptop-driven, IDM-influenced sound that would define his solo career. Produced by longtime collaborator Nigel Godrich, the album was largely composed on computers, utilizing samples and loops to create a more rhythmic, 'skittering' foundation than his band's work. Thematically, the album is heavily influenced by Yorke's concerns regarding climate change and the political climate of the era, most notably on 'Harrowdown Hill,' which references the death of weapons inspector David Kelly. Musically, it bridges the gap between the experimentalism of Kid A and the more rhythmic focus of later projects like Atoms for Peace. It was a commercial and critical success, proving that Yorke's songwriting could thrive in a minimalist, electronic environment without the safety net of a full band.
