The Escape Team

Released in late 2018 alongside 'My Murdered Remains,' The Escape Team represents a unique multimedia collaboration between They Might Be Giants and illustrator David Cowles. The album serves as a conceptual companion piece to Cowles' comic book of the same name, with each of the eleven tracks serving as a theme song or character study for a specific member of the 'Escape Team.' Sonicially, the album leans into the band's electronic and synth-pop influences, utilizing drum machines and prominent keyboard lines more heavily than their traditional guitar-and-accordion rock setup. Many of these tracks originated during the 2018 Dial-A-Song campaign, where they were paired with animated videos. Critically, it is viewed as a successful experiment in thematic constraint, showcasing the Johns' ability to write compelling, high-concept pop songs within very tight structural limits.
