The Gathering

Released in 1999, The Gathering is the debut studio album by the Israeli duo Infected Mushroom (Erez Eisen and Amit Duvdevani). It is widely regarded as a foundational text of the 'Dark Goa' or early Psytrance movement. Recorded before the duo integrated heavy live instrumentation and pop structures, the album relies on complex MIDI programming and hardware synthesis. The production is notable for its 'wet' sonic character, utilizing heavy resonance and filter sweeps to create a liquid-like texture. It famously incorporates samples from films like Independence Day and Batman & Robin, which contribute to its cinematic, often eerie atmosphere. While later albums would see them move toward 'Psy-core' and electronic rock, The Gathering remains their most pure contribution to the trance genre, praised for its melodic sophistication and dark, driving energy. It established Infected Mushroom as innovators who could balance dancefloor utility with high-concept sound design.
