The Ghost of Tom Joad

Released in 1995, The Ghost of Tom Joad represents Bruce Springsteen's most significant pivot toward social realism since 1982's Nebraska. Recorded primarily at his home studio in Los Angeles, the album eschews the 'Heartland Rock' tropes of his 80s peak in favor of a stark, acoustic palette. Thematically, it draws heavily from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath and the folk tradition of Woody Guthrie, updated for the post-NAFTA era of the 1990s. The songs focus on the struggles of Mexican immigrants, the decline of the steel industry in Ohio, and the cyclical nature of poverty. While it features minor contributions from E Street Band members, the arrangements are dominated by Springsteen's fingerpicked guitar and a vocal style that rarely rises above a whisper.
