The Great Cessation

Released in 2009, The Great Cessation marks the triumphant return of YOB after a three-year hiatus. Following the dissolution of Mike Scheidt's project Middian due to legal issues, this album served as a sonic rebirth, reuniting the band under the Profound Lore label. Sonically, it bridges the gap between the raw sludge of their early work and the more expansive, progressive 'cosmic doom' that would define their later output. The album is anchored by the massive title track, a twenty-minute epic that showcases the band's ability to maintain tension over extreme durations. Critical reception was overwhelmingly positive, noting the album's improved production and the emotional depth of Scheidt's vocal performance. The 2017 reissue further refined the sound with mastering by Heba Kadry, cementing its status as a pivotal entry in the modern doom metal canon.
