The Inner Sanctum

Released in 2007, The Inner Sanctum is often cited as the album that solidified Saxon's late-career renaissance. Following the success of Lionheart, this record saw the band leaning further into a heavier, more aggressive sound while maintaining their signature melodic sensibilities. Recorded at Gelsenkirchen's Blind Guardian Studio, the production is notably punchier and more 'modern' than their classic 80s output, featuring a thick, layered guitar sound and prominent double-bass drumming. The album is bookended by two of the band's most ambitious tracks: the atmospheric 'State of Grace' and the epic 'Atila the Hun,' the latter of which stands as one of their longest and most complex compositions. Critically, the album was praised for its energy and consistency, proving that the NWOBHM pioneers could compete with the intensity of contemporary power and thrash metal acts without losing their blue-collar identity.
