The Magic Box

Released in 2001, The Magic Box represents a significant stylistic expansion for Australian classical guitarist John Williams. While his career was built on the interpretation of the Western canon, this project saw him collaborating with African musicians and exploring the guitar traditions of countries like Cameroon, Cape Verde, and South Africa. The album features a diverse array of instrumentation, including the kora, sanza (thumb piano), and bamboo pipes, blending these textures with Williams' signature nylon-string guitar. Produced with a high-fidelity, dry intimacy, the record emphasizes the percussive nature of the guitar, moving away from romantic rubato toward steady, driving rhythms.
