The Need of Love

The Need of Love, released in November 1971, is the second studio album by Earth, Wind & Fire and represents the final statement of the band's original lineup before Maurice White completely overhauled the roster. Unlike the tight, pop-oriented funk that would define their Columbia Records era, this Warner Bros. release is a sprawling, experimental work heavily influenced by the Chicago jazz scene and the spiritual jazz movement. The nearly ten-minute opening track, 'Energy,' sets the tone with lyrics referencing prana and Nirvana, signaling the band's early commitment to metaphysical themes. Critically, the album is viewed as a bridge between the gritty R&B of the late 60s and the sophisticated fusion of the 70s. While it lacked a major commercial hit, it solidified the band's reputation for high-level musicianship and conceptual ambition. The production is notably more 'live' and less layered than their later work, featuring prominent use of the kalimba and a more aggressive, improvisational horn section.
