The Original Spinners

Released in 1967 on the Motown subsidiary V.I.P. Records, The Original Spinners serves as the debut long-player for a group that would later become synonymous with the Philadelphia soul sound of the 1970s. However, this collection is firmly rooted in the Detroit aesthetic. It compiles several years of singles and sessions, including their first major hit 'Truly Yours.' The production reflects the standard Motown excellence of the era, featuring contributions from legendary songwriters and producers like Ivy Jo Hunter and Harvey Fuqua. While the group would later achieve greater fame with Phillipe Wynne, this album features the lead vocals of Bobby Smith and G.C. Cameron, displaying a more traditional, gospel-influenced soul style. Critically, it is viewed as a high-quality example of mid-60s vocal group R&B, though it was somewhat overshadowed by the label's bigger stars like The Temptations or Four Tops at the time of its release.
