The Phantom Agony

Released in 2003, The Phantom Agony is the debut studio album by Dutch symphonic metal band Epica. Formed by Mark Jansen after his departure from After Forever, the album serves as a spiritual successor to his previous work, specifically continuing 'The Embrace That Smothers' song cycle. This cycle critiques organized religion, a theme that would become a cornerstone of Epica's identity. The album is notable for introducing the then-unknown 18-year-old Simone Simons, whose mezzo-soprano delivery became a defining characteristic of the genre.
