The Pit

Released in November 2013, The Pit is the 36th installment of Buckethead's prolific Pike Series. It stands out in the series for its cohesive, suite-like structure, with the first six tracks titled as parts of a singular theme. Sonically, it departs from the high-fidelity polish of his mainstream releases, opting for a dry, 'bedroom metal' aesthetic that emphasizes the tactile nature of the guitar strings. The album is largely built around mid-tempo, progressive metal riffs that lean into a post-metal sensibility, focusing on atmosphere and rhythmic weight over traditional song structures. The final track, 'The Pendulum,' acts as an epic coda, nearly doubling the length of the other tracks and solidifying the album's theme of inescapable, rhythmic motion. Critically, it is regarded by the fanbase as one of the more 'serious' and atmospheric entries in the early Pike era.
