The Spinning Top

Released in 2009, The Spinning Top is Graham Coxon's seventh solo studio album and represents a significant pivot from his established lo-fi indie rock persona. Produced by Stephen Street, the record is a concept album following the life of a man from birth to death. Musically, it is heavily influenced by the British folk revival of the 1960s, specifically the intricate fingerpicking styles of Bert Jansch and Davy Graham. The album features a sprawling 15-track sequence, including the centerpiece 'In the Morning', which extends over eight minutes and showcases Coxon's technical evolution as a guitarist. While acoustic-led, the album incorporates diverse instrumentation including double bass, saxophone, and various percussion, often recorded with a live, room-heavy feel. It stands as Coxon's most ambitious and cohesive solo work, moving away from the 'nervous energy' of his earlier catalog toward a more mature, pastoral, and technically demanding folk-rock hybrid.
