The Work

The Work is the fourth studio album by Rivers of Nihil and serves as the 'winter' conclusion to their season-themed tetralogy. Recorded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the album was heavily influenced by the band's collective mental health struggles and the pressure of following up their 2018 breakthrough. Bassist and primary lyricist Adam Biggs shifted the conceptual focus from abstract nature to the grueling reality of labor - emotional, creative, and physical. Sonically, the album departs from the 'Owls' era by incorporating more industrial influences, Nine Inch Nails-inspired piano work, and a colder, more compressed production style. It marks the final appearance of founding vocalist Jake Dieffenbach, making it a pivotal transitional moment in the band's history. Critics noted its ambitious scope and its willingness to alienate traditional death metal fans in favor of a more experimental, post-metal soundscape.
