After being diagnosed with a rare form of pregnancy-associated osteoporosis that resulted in several spinal fractures, Rose was unable to play music or even pick up her child for a significant period. This album is the direct result of her recovery process. Sonically, it departs from the purely acoustic chamber folk of 'No Words Left' by introducing elements of jazz, funk, and soul, largely influenced by her collaboration with producer Kwes. The record was primarily written on piano - an instrument she could play while seated during her recovery - and features a 'dry' production style that emphasizes the physical reality of the instruments.
