Released in 1985, Thursday Afternoon represents a pivotal moment in Brian Eno's career where he fully embraced the extended duration possibilities of the Compact Disc format. While his earlier ambient works like 'Music for Airports' were constrained by the 20-minute limits of vinyl sides, this 61-minute eponymous composition was designed specifically to take advantage of the CD's continuous playback. The piece originated as a soundtrack for a series of 'video paintings' - vertical-format video portraits of Christine Alicino - and the music retains that sense of static, painterly observation.
