Tomb for Two

Released in 2013, Tomb for Two is the third studio album by the Swiss-British duo Lebanon Hanover and is widely considered their magnum opus. The record solidified the 'coldwave' revival of the 2010s, blending the starkness of early 80s post-punk (think Joy Division or The Cure's Seventeen Seconds) with a modern, nihilistic sensibility. Recorded with a focus on analog warmth and minimalist arrangements, the album avoids the over-production common in contemporary rock, opting instead for a 'less is more' approach where the space between notes is as important as the notes themselves. The track 'Gallowdance' became an unexpected viral anthem within goth and alternative circles, its lyrics about dancing 'the gallowdance' serving as a metaphor for finding joy in the face of inevitable decay. Critically, the album was praised for its stylistic purity and its ability to evoke a specific, consistent atmosphere of 'nostalgia for a time never lived.'
