Tomboy

Released in 2011, Tomboy represents a pivotal shift in Panda Bear's (Noah Lennox) solo career. Following the massive success of Person Pitch, Lennox intentionally moved away from the sampler-based 'wall of sound' that defined his earlier work. Recorded in Lisbon, the album utilizes a more restricted palette of synthesizers, drum machines, and guitars. The songs were famously debuted live and released as a series of singles before the full album arrived, allowing the tracks to evolve into their final, dense forms. Sonically, it is much darker and more mid-range heavy than his previous work, influenced by the starkness of Nirvana and the rhythmic repetition of electronic music. Critics noted its focus on 'the song' over 'the sound,' though the production remains highly experimental. It solidified Lennox's status as a primary architect of the indie-electronic crossover sound of the early 2010s.
