Tramp

Released in 2012 on Jagjaguwar, Tramp represents a pivotal moment in Sharon Van Etten's career, moving her from the 'lonely folk' category into the vanguard of indie rock. Produced by Aaron Dessner of The National, the album was recorded over fourteen months in his home studio. The title reflects Van Etten's literal state at the time: she was couch-surfing and lacked a permanent residence, a nomadic existence that seeped into the restless, searching quality of the music. The record features an impressive roster of collaborators, including members of Beirut, Wye Oak, and The Walkmen, yet it remains singularly focused on Van Etten's vision. Sonically, it introduced a much more aggressive use of electric guitar and percussion than her previous efforts, particularly on the lead single 'Serpents.' Critics noted the album's increased confidence and the sophisticated way it balanced raw emotional vulnerability with dense, professional arrangements.
