Translating the Name

Released in 2003, Translating the Name is widely considered the foundational text of modern melodic post-hardcore. Despite its brief five-track runtime, it fundamentally altered the trajectory of the genre by introducing a level of technicality and 'shimmer' previously unseen in the scene. This was the only release from the band's initial run to feature vocalist Anthony Green, whose unique range and abstract lyrical style became the gold standard for the genre. The recording process was marked by transition; session drummer Pat Magrath provided the high-intensity percussion because permanent drummer Alex Rodriguez was unavailable. Musically, the EP is defined by Beau Burchell and Justin Shekoski's innovative use of guitar harmonics and delay, creating a 'wall of melody' that influenced thousands of MySpace-era bands. Critically, it is viewed as a perfect release, capturing a lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry that the band would spend years trying to replicate after Green's departure to form Circa Survive.
