Triakel

Triakel's self-titled debut, released in 1998, served as a radical counterpoint to the increasingly polished and 'world-music' adjacent folk scene of the late 90s. Formed by Emma Härdelin (Garmarna), Janne Strömstedt, and Kjell-Erik Eriksson (Hoven Droven), the trio stripped the Swedish folk tradition down to three essential elements: voice, fiddle, and harmonium. This self-imposed limitation became their defining characteristic. The album consists primarily of traditional songs from the Jämtland and Hälsingland regions, ranging from religious hymns to dark murder ballads and playful dance tunes. Critical reception, notably from AllMusic, highlighted the group's ability to balance 'gentleness and fury,' drawing comparisons to the stark English folk revivalism of Shirley and Dolly Collins.
