Released in 2003, Tribe is often defined by the brief, complicated return of founding guitarist and primary songwriter Chris DeGarmo. While marketed as a full reunion, DeGarmo's involvement was limited to writing and recording sessions before he departed again prior to the tour. Sonically, the album moves away from the alternative-heavy sound of Q2K and the operatic metal of their heyday, embracing a 'desert rock' aesthetic characterized by Mike Stone and Michael Wilton's gritty guitar tones and Scott Rockenfield's tribal percussion. The album was self-produced and mixed by Adam Kasper, known for his work with Soundgarden, which explains the record's lean, grunge-adjacent sonic profile.
