Trivium

Released in early 2003, the self-titled EP (often referred to as the Caere Demo or Blue Demo) serves as the foundational document for Trivium. Recorded when frontman Matt Heafy was only 16 or 17 years old, the album captures a pivotal moment in the Florida metal scene where melodic death metal and thrash were beginning to merge into the metalcore explosion. Unlike the polished 'Ascendancy' which followed, this EP features a much rawer production style and a vocal performance that is almost entirely screamed, showing a band heavily influenced by In Flames and Metallica but lacking the resources for high-end studio manipulation. Several tracks here were later re-recorded for their debut full-length 'Ember to Inferno', but these original versions possess a unique, unrefined energy. Critically, it is viewed as a technical marvel for musicians of their age at the time, establishing the dual-guitar harmony style that would become their career trademark.
