Tropico

Released in 1984, Tropico represents a significant stylistic pivot for Pat Benatar and her husband/collaborator Neil Giraldo. After five years of defining the hard-rocking 'tough girl' archetype of the early 80s, the duo consciously moved toward a 'gentler' sound, incorporating heavy synthesizer use and new wave influences. This shift was partly inspired by their personal lives - they discovered they were expecting their first child during the production - and a desire to move beyond the arena-rock formula. The album is anchored by the massive hit 'We Belong,' which remains one of the era's definitive power ballads, showcasing a more choral and melodic approach to Benatar's vocals. While it features the new bassist Donnie Nossov, the core of the sound remains the Giraldo-Benatar partnership, here exploring more atmospheric territory on tracks like 'Painted Desert.' Despite the change in direction, the album maintained her commercial streak, earning her a sixth consecutive Platinum certification and proving her versatility to a changing MTV-driven market.
