truANT

Released in August 2003, truANT served as the critical follow-up to Alien Ant Farm's multi-platinum breakthrough, ANThology. Produced by Robert and Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots, the album exhibits a more refined, 'classic rock' sensibility in its guitar tones compared to its predecessor. The recording context is significant; it was the first material written and recorded following the band's 2002 bus crash in Spain, which left lead singer Dryden Mitchell with a fractured neck. This trauma informs the lyrical depth of tracks like '1000 Days' and 'Hope', which trade the band's earlier prankster persona for a more contemplative, though still energetic, outlook. Musically, the album is a showcase for bassist Tye Zamora, whose 6-string slap technique remains a hallmark of the band's sound. Despite the success of the single 'These Days', the album struggled to match the commercial heights of their debut, partly due to the folding of their subsidiary label, DreamWorks Records, shortly after release.
