Twilight Time

Twilight Time (originally titled II in Finland) represents a critical developmental phase for Stratovarius. Recorded before the arrival of vocalist Timo Kotipelto and keyboardist Jens Johansson, the album features founding guitarist Timo Tolkki on lead vocals. This lineup configuration results in a sound that is significantly more grounded and 'heavy' than their later symphonic output. The songwriting leans heavily into progressive structures, particularly on the seven-minute centerpiece Madness Strikes at Midnight, which showcases Tolkki's neoclassical influences in a more sinister, subdued context. Critics, including those from AllMusic, have noted the album's importance in bridging the gap between the NWOBHM-influenced debut Fright Night and the band's eventual rise as power metal pioneers.
