Twist Uptown

Released in August 1962, Twist Uptown serves as the debut studio album for The Crystals and the inaugural LP for Philles Records. While the group is synonymous with the 'Wall of Sound,' this record represents a transitional period where the production is relatively sparse and focused on the vocal interplay of the quintet. Primarily featuring Barbara Alston on lead, the album showcases the songwriting prowess of the Aldon Music stable, specifically Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. The hit 'Uptown' is a landmark track for its early use of social class as a lyrical theme in pop. Notably, the album contains the original version of 'On Broadway' before it was reworked for The Drifters.
