Two Shoes

Released in 2005, Two Shoes is the second studio album by the Australian collective The Cat Empire. Seeking to evolve from the raw energy of their debut, the band traveled to Havana, Cuba, to record at the legendary Egrem Studios. This move profoundly influenced the album's sonic character, infusing their established ska-jazz foundation with authentic Latin percussion and a rich, analog warmth. The album debuted at number one on the ARIA Charts, cementing the band's status as a commercial powerhouse in Australia. While their debut was a collection of live favorites, Two Shoes is a more cohesive studio statement, featuring tighter arrangements and more ambitious songwriting, such as the nearly ten-minute closing suite. It remains their most critically and commercially successful work, defining the 'sunshine-reggae-jazz' aesthetic that would influence a generation of Australian roots artists.
