Following the transitional 'The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste', Al Jourgensen and Mike Scaccia fully integrated thrash metal speed with sample-heavy industrial production. The album is famous for its use of political samples (George H.W. Bush) and cinematic clips, which are used as rhythmic hooks rather than mere interludes. The recording was famously chaotic, fueled by heavy drug use and Jourgensen's perfectionism, resulting in a sound that is both meticulously layered and seemingly on the verge of collapse. It peaked at #27 on the Billboard 200 and remains a cornerstone of the 1990s alternative metal explosion, bridging the gap between underground industrial and mainstream metal.
