Uphill City

Released in 2008, Uphill City represents the creative peak of Shaw-Han Liem's project, I Am Robot and Proud. Following the underground success of 'The Electricity in Your House Wants to Sing,' this album refined Liem's signature blend of IDM-adjacent glitch and indie-pop melodicism. Recorded primarily in Toronto, the album is characterized by its use of 'crystalline' synth tones and highly structured, interlocking arrangements that echo the aesthetics of early 8-bit video game music while maintaining a sophisticated, modern production sheen. Critically, it was praised for its 'gentle complexity,' standing in stark contrast to the more aggressive or melancholic IDM of the era.
