Volcano

Released on March 3, 2017, by Heavenly Recordings, Volcano is the second studio album by the English rock band Temples. Following the success of their debut Sun Structures, the band opted to self-produce the record at their home studio. This environment allowed them to experiment heavily with synthesizers and modern production techniques that they had not yet mastered during their early recordings. Band member James Bagshaw noted that the album was the direct result of implementing a wealth of studio knowledge they lacked during their debut.

Sonically, Volcano represents a significant pivot toward synth-pop and art pop, integrating thick, analog-sounding keyboard textures alongside their signature 1960s-inspired guitar work and dense vocal harmonies. The album received generally favorable reviews from critics, with publications like Clash praising its intricately layered synths and distinctive sound, while others noted the departure from their more traditional psych-rock roots. Key tracks like "Certainty" and "Strange or Be Forgotten" showcase this new, punchier, and more electronic-forward direction.
