Vulnicura

A devastatingly intimate chronicle of heartbreak. Sweeping, self-arranged string ensembles collide with Arca's fractured, skeletal electronic beats.

Breakup chronicle

Cold, scraping beats slice through a thick fog of violins, sounding like a ribcage being gently cracked open. These songs map the exact, messy geometry of a long-term love falling apart in real time. You are placed right in the room as the vocals ache and shiver, surrounded by heavy, weeping strings and sharp digital static. It feels like watching a wound heal in slow motion, raw and wet, before the scar tissue finally begins to form.

While electronic experimentation remains a constant, the album elevates the violin to a central, heart-wrenching role, weaving vast and self-written classical arrangements that carry the heavy emotional weight of the grief.

Moments Worth Waiting For
04Black LakeThe ten-minute centerpiece 'Black Lake' moves at a glacial pace, punctuated by long, silent pauses and sudden, shivering string swells.
01StonemilkerOn 'Stonemilker', a lush, mourning string section carries the entire melodic weight before a soft, skittering electronic pulse enters.
Co-producers Arca and The Haxan Cloak help shape the album's tense, confrontational atmosphere by disrupting the classical arrangements with metallic percussion.

“Her ninth album, is not just her most focused work in more than a decade, but her first in a while aimed more at the heart than the head”

“One listen to Vulnicura confirms what’s been evident for a long time, but will still continue to come as a disappointment for many: Björk firmly belongs to the world of the avant-garde”

“Arranged for voice with orchestral strings and electronic beats, Vulnicura is a unified set of nine dark, swarming, melodically distended songs”

“The album places itself among the most human, emotionally candid, even functional of art forms: the breakup album”

“The album attempts to make the most out of its woes- every mourning process, every sign of anguish exists in order to ask questions, so that Bjork can locate an answer”

“It’s not an easy listen, but a brave, beautiful and affecting album – an attempt to find order in chaos that, as she wishes for it, offers a “crutch” to the heartbroken”

“Like all Björk albums before it, ‘Vulnicura’ is the work of many but the vessel, really, for the voice – and everything that means – of just one persistently empowering talent”

“The musical moments that capture Björk’s heartbreak are frequently stunning on Vulnicura, but the whole thing is a little shy on hooks and reasons to take the grueling journey with her often”

The Quietus
“The really great thing about this heavy, intense album, as punishing as it is beautiful in its resolve, is that it shakes to the core the philosophies that Björk laid out so methodically on Biophilia, but she still finds a dark difficult way back to hope and love”

“Vulnicura honors her pain and the necessary path through and away from loss with some of her bravest, most challenging, and most engaging music”
