Wages of Sin

Released in 2001, Wages of Sin marks the most significant turning point in Arch Enemy's career. It introduced German vocalist Angela Gossow, whose guttural delivery was so convincing that many fans initially assumed she was male, effectively challenging gender norms in extreme music. This was also the first record where the band utilized Standard-C tuning, resulting in a significantly heavier, darker guitar tone that became their signature. Produced by Fredrik Nordström and mixed by Andy Sneap, the album boasts a high-fidelity 'Gothenburg sound' that is both dense and sharp. Critics at the time, including those from AllMusic and Metal Storm, hailed it as a landmark release that revitalized the melodic death metal scene. The album successfully blends the technicality of progressive metal with the aggression of thrash, solidified by the Amott brothers' dual-lead interplay which draws heavily from neoclassical influences.
